Maintaining Your Tag Inventory

The following recommendations can be used to manage tags that have been returned to you, as well as tags that have run through their battery life and expired.

Deactivating Tags

Though a tag cannot be physically powered off once it is enabled, it can be taken offline so that it is not visible within the system.  This can be useful if, for example, a user is no longer employed by your facility but the tag still has many months before it reaches its end-of-life.  In this scenario, the tag can be saved and reassigned to another user for the duration of its lifespan.

Should a tag need to be taken offline:

  • Search for the tag within the Tags tab, then mark it as inactive
  • Label the tag accordingly so that you know it is a recycled tag and will not need to be powered on again.  Note the activation date for the tag as well, so that it can be disposed of if it is not reused.

Deactivating a tag will make the tag "invisible" to the application for monitoring purposes, but will not turn off the battery on the tag itself.

In scenarios where a current user needs a new tag, for example if their tag was lost or has expired, you can assign the user a new tag from your current active list.  Ensure that the tag number assigned matches the ID number printed on the tag itself and is powered on when you distribute the new tag.

Should you need replacement tags or additional tags due to expansion of coverage area, submit a ticket and Support will reach out to you to complete the order.

Disposing of Inactive Tags

The lifespan of a tag 52 weeks from its activation date, which is set within Insights.  When a tag is approaching end-of-life, it must be replaced to ensure optimal performance.

Notifications will be sent via email 90 days prior to - and then through - its expiration date, providing Admins with time to re-order and assign new tags. Follow the instructions above for inactivating expired tags and assigning new tags to users within Insights.

Once deactivated, submit the expired tags to your facilities team; expired tags should be recycled with electronics for proper disposal.  Local jurisdictions have their own rules on โ€˜electronics disposal,โ€™ and qualifications may vary. The following components can be used to check against your local recycling requirements. Each tag contains:

  • one PCB (circuit board)
  • six CR2016 batteries (alkaline coin cells)
  • multiple surface-mounted electronic components
